Video and Article review
1. In video 1 I learned that aesthetics is the study of beauty and art. When I used to hear the term aesthetic I usually just thought of something that was pleasing to the eye, which is true but I now know that it is more than that. In video 2 I learned that works of art are made from human productions based off of their emotional states. Many artists create their work and relate it to feelings that they have and they express it in their artwork. In the article, I found it interesting that the brain automatically detects lines, colors and faces. The way our retina is built, the colors red green and blue are most prominent in our color scheme.
2. Personally, I believe that Plato's theory on aesthetics is the most important. Plato's philosophies were the most famous through the 4th century B.C. What stood out to me the most is how Plato quoted, "There is a beauty by which all things are beautiful". I believe this is the most important philosophy to learn because even the simplest works of art can have the most meaning to them. It helped me realize that the little things in life are beautiful and can mean the most.
3. Changeux and Ramachandran's scientific views of art are very interesting. I enjoyed learning about how the human eye and brain work to visualize the art in our everyday life. It was also fascinating to learn the way our brain automatically makes a meaning of something based off of our emotions at that time. One thing from Changeux that I found interesting was how we process images through our retina. This is known as bottom-up visuals and how their is a rich connection between our limbic system and our prefrontal cortex. Ramachandran's view on how art and science meet in the brain fascinated me because he explained how cross cultured art brought him to the different universal principles of art. I knew there was Greek, Roman, Chinese, American and many more forms of art but it was very interesting to hear him talk about how art has changed throughout history.
4. The videos I watched and the article I read relates to the readings in the text because they all discuss the meaning of aesthetics and the history behind art itself.
5. The films and articles taught me a lot so in my opinion they were very influential in making me want to learn more. They helped add depth because they gave me more details in order to understand the meaning of what is in the book.
