module 11 project
Artist: Jonathon Rogers
Title: New Beginning from the Visions of Faith series, 2006
Media: Graphite on paper
1. The way the clouds are formed with graphite and the perfection of the hand and its creases amazes me.
2. I see a hand holding up a small child toward the sun within the clouds.
3. The principles and elements of this artwork has form and value within it.
4. I'm sure there is a metaphor behind this painting but I cannot think of it, it definitely has a strong meaning behind it.
5. I think the artist was trying to show life being given by God.

Title: Group Self-Portrait #3 from the Group Self Portraits series, 2003
Media: Oil on canvas
1. There is a lot of detail within this piece. The foreground/background effect is strongly showed and the color hues that change are very emphasized. Especially since some of the 'people' are colored and then there is an emphasis on the black figures above.
2. I see many weird figures and lots of trees and colors In this piece. I feel like the bottom of the piece is supposed to be a river going downstream and there is light at the end of the darkness that is upfront. I also see a happier face behind the black creature in the middle.
3. Principles and elements: color, form, shapes, emphasis, line, balance, and repetition
4. Light at the end of a tunnel is what this reminds me of.
5. I think the artist was trying to show life being taken away but once there is death, there is happiness and lightness.

Title: Deliverance from the Visitors of Faith series, 2000
Media: Oil on canvas
1. There is a lot of color change within this piece and done very well, the size of the hands compared to the angel baby is emphasized and the small bit of blue behind the clouds signifies something as well.
2. I see hands sending a baby into heaven, because it has angel wings on its back, showing they are going to heaven.
3. Principles and elements: value and emphasis
4. Again this reminds me of light at the end of a tunnel/darkness.
5. I think the artist was trying to show that the baby was going to heaven even though there is a tough time (darkness) to deal with due to this death. It is showing there is light and happiness for the baby now.
The exhibition:
1. Jonathon Rogers Complexity of Life
2. Life
The Gallery:
1. Low lighting
2. Navy blue
3. No architecture, just benches to sit on and artwork.
4. Every time you move there is something new to look at.
The Artwork:
1. Beginning of life is in the front, death is in the back.
2. All pieces of work have the same style of work.
3. Some pieces seem dark due to the meaning of death and some are colorful for life.
4. The pieces are not framed besides the graphite work.
5. 'New Beginning' 'Deliverance' and 'Group Self Portrait'
6. 3-4 ft for oil canvas's and 1ft apart for graphite pieces.
I think visiting the gallery with a new perspective in mind changed my outlook on the artwork. It helped me feel and think more about the artwork and how to properly decipher them.
